INSIDE ETHIOPIA SPECIAL TOURS

These tours are aimed at providing the best travel experience during your stay in Ethiopia. Inside Ethiopia Special Tours offer the opportunity to travel through time while taking part in the Ethiopian lifestyles of the different ethnic groups spread throughout the country. The tour starts on the Northern Historical Route to witness the Ethiopian richest history and continues in the Omo Valley to immerse the traveller in the traditional lifestyles of different tribes. The 30 days tour also includes the visit to the spectacular desert area of the Danakil Depression. During these combined tours, you will be able to discover the highlands scenery and wildlife and share unforgettable experiences with the local people in their villages.


17 Days

Day 1 Arrive to Addis Ababa, welcoming from an Insider at the airport and city tour in Addis Ababa with a visit to the Ethnographic and National Museums, the Trinity Church and the largest open market in Africa, Merkato. Overnight in Addis Ababa (hotel) 

Day 2 Fly to Bahir Dar. Visit the local market and take a boat trip on the Lake Tana to visit the monasteries of the Zege Peninsula. In the afternoon, drive to the Blue Nile Falls for a hike in the surroundings. Overnight in Bahir Dar (hotel)

Day 3 Drive to Gondar and visit the UNESCO Royal Enclosure, a group of castles from the 17th century. In the afternoon, visit the Debre Birhan Selassie church and the Fasilide’s pool area. Overnight in Gondar (hotel)

Day 4 Drive to the Simien Mountains National Park for trekking. Overnight inside the park (lodge or camping)

Day 5 Trekking day at the Simien Mountains National Park from Sankabar to Geech via the Jinbar waterfall. You will be picked up near the waterfall back to Gondar for overnight (hotel)

Day 6 In the morning, fly to Axum and start the city with visits to the Archeological Museum, the tombs, the stelae field and the Maryam Zion church. Overnight in Axum (hotel)

Day 7 Fly to Lalibela and visit the stunning rock-hewn churches, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the Eight Wonders of the World. Overnight in Lalibela (lodge or hotel)

Day 8 Hike with mules to Asheton Mountain and visit a 13th century rock-hewn monastery and drive to Yemherhanna Kristos, a rock-caved church located 42 km away Lalibela. Overnight in Lalibela (lodge or hotel)

Day 9 Fly to Addis Ababa. In the afternoon visit Merkato, the largest open market in Africa with free time for optional souvenir shopping or sightseeing. Overnight in Addis Ababa (hotel)

Day 10 Drive to Arba Minch via Hosena. You will be able to see different historical places on the way such as Melka Kunture, a stone-age archeological site; Adadi Mariam, a 12th century rock-hewn church and Tiya, a stelae from the 12th century considered as a World Heritage site by UNESCO. Overnight in Arba Minch (lodge or hotel)

Day 11 Visit the Nechisar National Park and take boat trip on the Lake Chamo to see crocodiles, hippopotami and abundant bird species. Proceed to Jinka and visit some ethnic tribes such as Gamo and Derashe. Overnight in Jinka (lodge, hotel or camping)

Day 12 Drive to the Mago National Park to visit the Mursi ethnic tribe, known for the clay plates used by the women on their lower lip. In the afternoon, visit the South Omo Museum and Research Center or take a hike to visit the Ari village in the surrounding mountains. Overnight in Jinka (lodge, hotel or camping)

Day 13 Drive to the villages of Turmi to visit the tribe of Hamer, where you may witness the “bull-jumping” tradition that young men try to accomplish in order to get married. Visit the Benna and Ari people on the way to Turmi. Overnight in Turmi (lodge, hotel or camping)

Day 14 Drive to Murele and visit the Karo people, famous for their meticulous body-painting tradition. Drive back to Turmi for overnight (lodge, hotel or camping)

Day 15 Drive to Konso and visit the wakas, wooden statures erected in honor of the dead heroes and the 55 km stonewalled terraces and fortified settlements declared as World Heritage Site by the UNESCO and also known as the natural “New York village”. Overnight in Konso (lodge, hotel or camping)

Day 16 Drive to Awassa and visit the Dorze Village on the way, known for the beehive-shaped bamboo houses and the fine cotton weaved by their people. Overnight in Awassa (hotel)

Day 17 In the morning, visit the fish market of Awassa and drive back to Addis Ababa via the Rift Valley Lakes with some free time for souvenir shopping or sightseeing. In the evening, farewell dinner at a traditional restaurant with local dancers and musicians representing some of the country’s ethnic groups. Transfer to airport for departure. End of the tour.

Day 2 City tour in Addis Ababa including the visit of the Ethnographic and National Museums, the Trinity Church and the largest open market in Africa, Merkato. Overnight in Addis Ababa (hotel)

Day 8 Drive to Hawzien via Adwa, the historic battlefield where the victory over the Italians took place in 1895 and visit the ruins of the Yeha temple the ancient cliff top monastery of Debre Damo on the way. Continue to Adigrat, an important junction link between Ethiopia and Eritrea and finally reach Hawzien for overnight (lodge or hotel)

Day 9 Excursion to the main churches of Geralta Region, starting with the rock-hewn churches of Abune Yemata Guh, Debre Mariam Korkor and Daniel Korkor. Overnight in Hawzien (lodge or hotel)

Day 10 Drive to Mekele and visit the churches of Wukro Cherkos and Abraha Weastbeha on the way. Overnight in Mekele (hotel)

Day 11 Drive to Ahmedela via Berhaile to the camp sight, and see camel caravans passing against a backdrop of dramatic sunsets. Overnight in Ahmedela (camping)

Day 12 Drive to Lake Asale to observe the salt workers cutting bricks of salt form the lake to be transported on camel caravans for selling at the market. Drive to Dalol for camping overnight

Day 13 Drive to Dodom and trek to the Erta Ale volcano (613m below sea level) for 15 km to see the stunning volcanic eruption. Overnight nearby the volcano area (camping)

Day 14 Drive back to Mekele for overnight (hotel)

Day 15 Embark on a full day of driving to Lalibela starting early in the morning, passing through the small villages to witness the countryside lifestyles of the Tigray region. Overnight in Lalibela (lodge or hotel)

Day 16 Visit the stunning rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the Eight Wonders of the World. Overnight in Lalibela (lodge or hotel)

Day 17 Fly to Dire Dawa via Addis Ababa with Ethiopian Airlines, continue by vehicle from Dire Dawa to Harar for overnight (hotel or harare pension)

Day 18 Visit the 16th century walled city of Harar, considered as one of the World Heritage sites by UNESCO, with a visit to Arthur Rimbaud’ house during the 19th century and the National and Harari museums. End the tour with the visit to the house of Haile Selassie’s father, Ras Mekonnen and in the evening, see the peculiar spectacle of the hyena-man by the city wall. Overnight in Harar (hotel or harare pension)

Day 19  Drive to Awash National Park and enjoy a tour around the park to see the wildlife and admire a stunning sunset from the lodge located by the Awash River falls. Overnight in Awash National Park (lodge or camping)

Day 20 In the morning, drive to the Rift Valley Lakes and stop at the Abiatta and Shalla National Park. Drive to one of the resorts by the Lake Langano for lunch and enjoy the rest of the afternoon on the beach. Overnight in Langano (resort, hotel or camping=

Day 30 Drive back to Addis Ababa. In the evening, farewell dinner at a traditional restaurant with local dancers and musicians representing some of the country’s ethnic groups. Transfer to airport for departure. End of the tour.
