Bahir Dar - Gondar - Simien Mountains National Park - Axum - Lalibela

6 Days

Day 1 Fly to Bahir Dar. Visit the local market and take a boat trip on the Lake Tana to visit the monasteries of the Zege Peninsula. In the afternoon, drive to the Blue Nile Falls for a hike in the surroundings. Overnight in Bahir Dar (hotel)

Day 2 Drive to Gondar and visit the UNESCO Royal Enclosure, a group of castles from the 17th century. In the afternoon, visit the Debre Birhan Selassie church and the Fasilide’s pool area. Overnight in Gondar (hotel)

Day 3 Fly to Axum and visit the Archeological Museum, the tombs, the stelae field and the Maryam Zion church. Overnight in Axum (hotel)

Day 4 Fly to Lalibela and visit the 11 rock-hewn churches, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Overnight in Lalibela (hotel)

Day 5 Hike with mules to Asheton Mountain and visit a 13th century rock-hewn monastery. In the afternoon, drive to Yemherhanna Kristos, a rock-caved church located 42 km away from Lalibela. Overnight in Lalibela (hotel)

Day 6 Fly to Addis Ababa with time to do some souvenir shopping or sightseeing. In the evening, farewell dinner at a traditional restaurant with local dancers and musicians representing some of the country’s ethnic groups. Transfer to airport for departure. End of the tour

TIGRAY ROCK-HEWN CHURCHES

Mekele - Hawzien and the Gueralta Valley

The Northern region of Tigray is the perfect scenario to enjoy an unforgettable trekking day along the sandstone ridges with astounding views through the Gueralta valley. Climbing up to the rock-hewn churches will take you back to the 4th century. On your way, you will witness age-old farming practices while surrounded by gelada baboons or birds of prey. 4 Days

Day 1 Fly to Axum, home of the ancient Axumite Empire, the Queen of Sheba and the Ark of the Covenant, and visit the Archeological Museum, the tombs, the stelae field and the Maryam Zion church. Overnight in Axum (hotel)

Day 2 Drive to Hawzien via Adwa, the historic battlefield where the victory over the Italians took place in 1895 and visit the ruins of the Yeha temple and the ancient cliff top monastery of Debre Damo and on the way. Continue to Adigrat, an important junction link between Ethiopia and Eritrea and finally reach Hawzien for overnight

Day 3 Excursion to the main churches of Geralta Region, including the rock-hewn churches of Abune Yemata Guh, Debre Mariam Korkor and Daniel Korkor. Overnight in Hawzien (lodge or hotel)

Day 4 Drive to Mekele and visit the churches of Wukro Cherkos and Abraha Weastbeha on the way. In the late afternoon, fly to Addis Ababa. 7 Days

Day 1 Fly to Mekele, the capital city of the Tigray region. Spend the day exploring the city with a tour to the Emperor Yohanis castle, the local market and the museum. Overnight in Mekele (hotel)

Day 2 Drive to Hawzien and visit the Wukro Cherkos rock-hewn church and Abreha we Atsebeha on the way. Overnight in Hawzien (lodge or hotel)

Day 3 Excursion to Dugem nearby churches including Abuna Abraham Debre Tsion and Yohannis Maikudi. Drive back to Hawzien for overnight (lodge or hotel)

Day 4 Excursion to Megab nearby churches. Trek up to a small plateau atop a sheer-sided 2,480 meters high mountain to visit Maryam Korkor Church. After descending, take a picnic and head towards Abune Yemata Guh, the most compelling church in the Tigray region. Please not that this route is not eligible for people suffering from vertigo. Drive back to Hawzien for overnight (lodge or hotel)

HARAR AND EASTERN ETHIOPIA

Dire Dawa - Harar - Awash National Park

The tour to the Eastern part of Ethiopia will take you through the savannah to reach Awash National Park, where you can easily spot wildlife and nature, and continue to Dire Dawa, important link to Djibouti in other times and current industrial center with several markets. The old railway station is the meeting point of this colourful city, surrounded by merchants, camels, donkeys and spiritual people. The journey ends up in Harar, a major commercial center that has served as a link to the rest of the country and the Horn of Africa for centuries. The old walled city, known as Harar Jugol, is included in the World Heritage List by UNESCO due to its recognition as a cultural heritage. In this enclosure, you can also find Arthur Rimbaud’s house during his stay in the 19th century. Sneaking around Harar’s streets will take you to medieval times and being surrounded by its colourful native clothes will definitely make you feel cheerful. End up your tour with a visit to the hyena-man, a peculiar spectacle that takes place every night by the city wall.


3 Days

Day 1 Fly to Dire Dawa early in the morning and continue to Harar by car with optional stop at the largest chat market in Aweday. Visit the 16th century walled city of Harar, one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites in Ethiopia and the house of the renowned French poet Arthur Rimbaud during the 19th century. Overnight in Harar (hotel or harare pension)

Day 2 In the morning, visit the colorful Islamic market and the house of Ras Mekonnen, father of Emperor Haile Selassie. In the afternoon, visit the National and Harari museums or drive outside the city (around 35 km) to visit the countryside village of Argoba, also known as the Stone Village for its peculiar houses. In the evening, see the famous “Hyena Man” outside the city of Harar. Overnight in Harar (hotel or harare pension)

Day 3 Drive back to Dire Dawa with optional city tour and transfer to the airport for departure to Addis Ababa in the afternoon. Arrive to Addis Ababa with some time for souvenir shopping.
