Lalibela Express – 2 Days

You don’t need a week to understand why Lalibela matters. Two days is enough, if you use them well. This short, focused visit is built for travelers with limited time: a layover, a quick detour from Addis, or a long weekend. You’ll land before midday, visit the first cluster of rock-hewn churches while the morning light is still soft, and wake early the next day to climb Mount Asheton as the sun rises over the Lasta highlands. By late afternoon you’re back at the

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE ROUTE

  • Sunrise hike or mule ride to Asheton Maryam Monastery
  • Traditional coffee ceremony in a village home
  • Panoramic views of Lalibela from the mountain ridge

Day 1

Fly from Addis Ababa to Lalibela. Ethiopian Airlines operates direct flights daily; the journey takes about 1 hour 15 minutes, covering roughly 334 kilometers. You will be met at the airport and transferred to your lodge (the drive into town takes roughly 20 – 30 minutes). After settling in, begin your visit with the northwestern cluster of churches. These six structures, carved from red volcanic rock between the 12th and 13th centuries under King Lalibela, remain active places of worship, not museums. You will walk through the world’s largest rock-hewn church, Beta Medhane Alem, with its 72 pillars, and then follow underground tunnels to Beta Maryam, Beta Meskel, and Beta Denagel. In the late afternoon, cross the dry riverbed to reach Bet Giyorgis, the cross-shaped church carved deep into the ground. Late afternoons here are quiet, and the low sun brings out the warm colour of the rock. Overnight in Lalibela (lodge or hotel).

Day 2

Pre-dawn start for the hike (or mule ride) up Mount Asheton. The trail climbs past terraced barley fields to a 13th-century rock monastery perched at around 3,860 meters. The climb takes roughly two hours; the view from the top, with the morning mist still hanging over the town below, makes an early start worth it. After descending, drive to a farming village near Lalibela to take part in a traditional coffee ceremony. You’ll have time to sit, talk, and enjoy it properly. In the afternoon transfer to the airport for your return flight to Addis Ababa. In the evening, Inside Ethiopia Tours offers a farewell traditional dinner in Addis with live music and dance from across the country’s ethnic groups. End of tour.
