MESQEL IN ADDIS ABABA
The Great Bonfire of the True Cross
2 Days / 1 Night · September 26–27
Mesqel “መስቀል” means cross and every September, Ethiopia re-enacts one of the most ancient moments in Christian history: Empress Helena’s discovery of the True Cross in 327 AD, guided by the smoke of a burning fire to where the cross lay buried. Hundreds of thousands of white-clad worshippers fill Mesqel Square as the Demera a towering ceremonial bonfire is lit by the Patriarch, golden Mesqel daisies erupt across the highlands, and the faithful mark their foreheads with ashes in the sign of the cross at dawn. A piece of the True Cross, gifted to Ethiopia by the Patriarch of Alexandria in the Middle Ages, is said to rest to this day at Gishen Mariam Monastery in northern Ethiopia. A living celebration observed without interruption since the ancient Aksumite Empire unbroken for over 1,600 years.
DAY 1 — DEMERA EVE | SEPTEMBER 26
Afternoon arrival at Mesqel Square to witness the assembly and decoration of the towering Demera bonfire, a conical pyre of poles, green grass, and golden Mesqel daisies. As dusk approaches, hundreds of thousands of white-clad worshippers fill the great square. Colourfully robed priests chant hymns and perform the sacred ritual dance before the pyre. At the climax, the Patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church lights the Demera. The bonfire roars to life. As it falls, the direction it collapses is read as a portent for the year ahead.
DAY 2 — MESQEL DAY | SEPTEMBER 27
Return to the site of the Demera at sunrise. Believers gather to mark their foreheads with ashes from the fire in the sign of the cross, a deeply personal and ancient gesture of faith observed on this morning every year. The landscape is golden with the mass blooming of Mesqel daisies, tiny yellow flowers that appear each year precisely at this festival. Visit Holy Trinity Cathedral for the Mesqel morning liturgy.
