DAY 1 — JANUARY 18 | KETERA EVE — 40 ARKS CONVERGE
Proceed to Jan Meda, the great ceremonial field that hosts the city’s Timket gathering. Over 40 Tabots from churches across the capital arrive in a brilliant procession, each carried on the head of a priest in ceremonial robes of gold, crimson, and white. Special tents are erected for each sacred Ark. Deacons and priests sing, chant, and perform the sacred ritual dance as hundreds of thousands of white-clad faithful fill the field. The sacred drum beats. The night crackles with sacred energy. This is the Eve of the Baptism of Christ.

Tens of thousands press forward to be sprinkled, to renew their baptism vows, to immerse themselves fully in the blessed water. White-clad figures fill every inch of the field. Incense drifts across the crowd. Prayer and song rise over the water in the early light. By midday, the Tabots are escorted back to their churches in a great joyful procession of dancing, singing, and communal celebration.
